Fall asleep peacefully, wake up refreshed - melatonin for a better sleep

Melatonin is one of the key hormones for maintaining normal diurnal rhythms, sleep and wakefulness. Its deficiencies can disrupt the circadian cycle and make it difficult to fall asleep. The amount of melatonin produced by the pineal gland decreases with age, so elderly people or those who work in shifts or frequently change time zones are most at risk of melatonin deficiency. It is effective in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep, reducing the number of night wakings and improving the quality of sleep. It is also a powerful antioxidant.

It acts as an antioxidant, supports the immune system, has osteogenic effects and regulates blood pressure. There are the first clinical studies that suggest the potential of melatonin in relieving reflux symptoms. By supporting nocturnal recovery, it may optimise cortisol levels and have a protective effect on mitochondria - an effective defence against oxidative stress.

Melatonin and anti-aging

Melatonin deficiency, which occurs in the skin with age, reduces skin thickness, increases lipid peroxidation and induces dermal degenerative changes. Furthermore, declining levels with age or sleep problems effectively prevent proper regeneration of the body, including, most notably, nocturnal production of glutathione - the human body's most potent antioxidant. Restoring melatonin to proper levels through supplementation can help restore smooth skin and reverse changes caused by the loss of collagen and elastin due to sun damage. It is worth mentioning that, in addition to glutathione, growth hormone is also secreted at night.
Furthermore, the existence of melatonin synthesis receptors and the expression of melatonin receptors in hair follicles have also been demonstrated, and its effect on hair growth phases has been observed.

According to recent findings, our skin has a melatoninergic enzyme system that leads to the expression of specific enzymes necessary in the melatonin biosynthesis pathway. In addition, keratinocytes, melanocytes and fibroblasts have characteristics typical of melatonin receptors, which means that melatonin can influence their proliferation and differentiation i.e. rejuvenate the skin.
